Allen Meadows Burghound 88

1995 750 ml Volnay "Clos des Chênes" 1er Cru Red Tasting note: Rich but backward, structured but ripe, this offers solid complexity and grand cru length in a style that emphasizes elegance, finesse, fine balance and sneaky length. An excellent effort for what was a difficult vintage in the Côte de Beaune and this should drink well for a long time as there is still noticeable, but not hard, finishing structure. Tasted: Aug 14, 2004 Score: 88 Drink: From 2009+ Allen Meadows Burghound.

John Gilman View from the Cellar 92

The 1995 Clos des Chênes is maturing very nicely, and is much more easy to get a read on than the very closed 1996. The bouquet is moving into its mature panoply of aromatics, as it offers up a complex blend of plums, black cherries, sous bois, bonfires, a bit of cigar ash, meaty tones and spicy wood. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, deep and nicely evolved, with a fine core of black fruit, solid acids, impressive complexity and focus, and a bit of remaining tannin still to resolve on the long, complex finish. While this wine still has some tannin to drop, it is really drinking very well at this stage, and it is hardly a crime to be opening bottles at the present time. It is a very successful 1995, and while it may not ultimately posses quite the same brilliance and breadth of complexity of vintages such as 1999 or 1993, it is a very fine bottle of wine.
