Allen Meadows Burghound 92

2004 Domaine Michel Lafarge Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes (France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru) Burghound, 4/1/2007, 2nd Quarter, 2007, Allen Meadows (web) 92 Fresh, ripe and complex earthy red fruit aromas introduce big, rich and sweet flavors that deliver plenty of punch but they're not robust or unduly hard because while the tannins are very firm, they are well-integrated. There is an element of reserve here yet the flavors are delicious and possess plenty of flesh. Lovely stuff that will age well. (drink starting 2010)

John Gilman View from the Cellar 94

2004 Domaine Michel Lafarge Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes (France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru) View From the Cellar, 1/1/2006, Jan/Feb 2006, John Gilman 94 In 2004 the Lafarge Clos des Chênes is as closed as the above, but clearly a step up from all the lovely wines that have preceded it in the cellar. Clearly this will be a great vintage for this wine, as the bouquet offers up a very pure and very refined blend of plums, red and black cherries, bitter chocolate, plenty of violets, complex soil tones, some fresh thyme and a deft framing of vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is fullbodied, focused like Lafite, and rock solid at the core, with great reserves, ripe tannins, bright acids, and a very long, complete finish. One can hardly imagine a better balanced young wine. (drink 2012-2040)
