Stephen Tanzers International Wine Cellar 88

2005 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Monthelie Les Duresses Good deep red. Black fruits, licorice and menthol on the nose. Juicy and tight, but with an almost liqueur-like ripeness to its black fruit and licorice flavors. Intensely flavored and nicely focused wine whose firm tannic spine calls for a good four or five years of patience. Very strong for this cuvee 88

John Gilman View from the Cellar 89

2005 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Monthélie 1er Cru Les Duresses (France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Monthélie 1er Cru) View From the Cellar, 11/1/2006, Nov/Dec 2006, John Gilman 89 I tasted the 2005 Monthelie out of a new barrel, as it was one of the few casks that had actually finished its malolactic already. The final percentage of new oak will be just over a third (eight new casks out of twenty-five), and the wine should prove to be a very good example. The bouquet offers up a fine mélange of black cherries, raspberries, earth, woodsmoke and a touch of spicy new oak. On the palate the wine is fullish, ripe and beautifully balanced, with good mid-palate depth, sound acids, ripe tannins, and impressive length and grip on the shapely finish. This is really lovely in 2005. (drink 2012-2025)
