Allen Meadows Burghound 92

2005 Domaine Michel Lafarge Beaune 1er Cru Grèves (France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru) Burghound, 4/1/2008, 2nd Quarter, 2008, Allen Meadows (web) 92 This is riper if less elegant with serious and reserved aromas of red berry fruit, warm earth, subtle spice notes and hints of smoke that lead to rich, full, punchy and relatively powerful flavors that possess absolutely superb depth of material on the wonderfully long finish. This is built to age and will require at least a decade to arrive at its majority. This is an extremely impressive and powerful Beaune. (drink starting 2015)

John Gilman View from the Cellar 93

2005 Domaine Michel Lafarge Beaune 1er Cru Grèves (France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru) View From the Cellar, 1/1/2007, Jan/Feb 2007, John Gilman 93 In notable contrast to the wide open and utterly engaging les Aigrots, the 2005 Grèves is quite tightly-knit and wound up for cellaring. That said, this is an utterly brilliant bottle of Beaune in the making, and for those Lafarge fans out there that normally do not pay much attention to the Beaune “Grèves” in the cellars here (I was once a Volnay-only guy here myself, but have mended my ways), you are strongly admonished not to overlook this brilliant wine in 2005. The bouquet is deep, pure and stunning, as it offers up a primary mélange of cherries, raspberries, woodsmoke, utterly striking minerality, and an exotic, spicy topnote. On the palate the wine is medium-full, intensely flavored and rapier-like in its focus, with a rock solid core of pristine fruit, stunning transparency, wonderful grip, and great cut and tang on the very, very long, ripely tannic and brilliantly balanced finish. Young Beaune just does not get any better than this. (drink 2012-2035)
