Allen Meadows Burghound 91

2006 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Volnay 1er Cru Champans (France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru) Burghound, 4/1/2009, 2nd Quarter, 2009, Allen Meadows (web) 91 A notably reserved cool red berry fruit and earth infused nose complements well the rich, full and also distinctly earthy medium plus-bodied flavors brimming with dry extract and sneaky persistence. This has added the depth missing from barrel last year and while the tannins are less refined than those of the Clos des Chênes, there is even better complexity now. (drink starting 2014)

Stephen Tanzers International Wine Cellar 89

2006 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Volnay Champans, two-thirds of these vines are now 85 years old, according to Lafon) Good fresh, deep red. Rather brooding nose offers red cherry, smoke, earth and a whiff of menthol. More reticent and tight in the mouth than the Clos des Chenes, showing less early sweetness but more power. Distinctly clenched today, finishing with a serious tannic spine. This one will need at least five years of cellaring. 89
